NOTE: There's no doubt that over the last 100 years the march has
steadily declined in popularity as the music repertoire has expanded. This point is illustrated most by the fact that
high school and college bands, especially marching bands, no longer consider march music as the fundamental backbone
of musical entertainment, as it was in the early part of the 20th century. The website listed just below, MarchingArts.com,
lists approximately 1400 high school websites. I 'm looking at them all and while near half have
some kind of music for hearing or downloading, , only about 3 % have included standard march music audio on
there website, which is filled mostly with jazz, show tunes, pop music, etc.
I;m not sure that this has more to do with band directors in general or the musical public, but it is obvious that the form
of music mostly in demand is shaped mainly by the changing culture, recording industry, and other big money interests....as
are most other things in our society. If you know of a website I've overlooked, as they do change frequently, let
me know and I will include it.. JB
Directry Of College & HS Marching Bands Link includes over 1500 direct links to College and High School
